A zingy Zin with a ton of pizzazz, the 2011 BEDROCK Saitone Ranch Zinfandel is a great work of pop art—a Roy Lichtenstein of the varietal. Painted with the bold, deep purple color of native California Zinfandel grapes from vines planted in 1896 along with dots and more dots of an abstract variety of other grapes such as Alicante and Petite Sirah, in the bottle is a pastiche of California blending. By presenting these raw borrowed materials in a new context, like Lichtenstein did so provocatively (see examples of Lichtenstein’s artwork), the artist redefines how we look at an object, in this case a California Zinfandel. You think you know Zinfandel, but you don’t know Zinfandel. This wine challenges the familiar. And, at the heart of the winemaking, there’s a certain bravura—a combination of instinct, technique, passion, intellect and not giving a shit what anyone else thinks. This is Bedrock, and it’s unlike any Zin you’ve had before. A true original—in its own way, radical and exciting. –J.M.
